Post – Operative instructions for Strabismus Surgery: Dr. Andrew Budning

  1. Normal diet may be resumed
  2. No eye patch is required. There may however be some wateriness or even bloody tears the day of surgery. These should be wiped away with a moist clean cotton ball, washcloth or piece of Gauze.
  3. Itchiness, with discomfort and the feeling that something is in the eye is to be expected. This is due to the dissolving sutures on the surface. This will improve day by day.
  4. For discomfort (headache or eye discomfort) any Acetaminophen medication (Tylenol, Astasol, etc.) is acceptable to use. Please avoid aspirin (ASA).
  5. Some clear to yellowish discharge is to be expected for about 5 days after the operation. The eye(s) may even be stuck shut in the morning. You should clean this away with a moist clean cotton ball, washcloth or piece of Gauze.
  6. If the discharge becomes greenish, or continues to worsen after the 2nd to 3rd post-operative day, please call your doctor.
  7. Most normal activities may be resumed after the first post-operative visit.
  8. Avoid swimming, dirt and sand for the first 2 weeks post operatively.
  9. No eye medications are required unless specified by your Doctor.
