Patching

Patching:

1) It is important to patch the exact amount that we've recommended for your child. Patching too little may not be enough to help him/her, while patching too much could actually make things worse.

 2) You should monitor your child for any peeking. Cheating will prevent the treatment from working.

 3) If your child wears glasses, in most cases s/he will need to wear the glasses in combination with the patch.

 4) You can purchase patches from our office, certain drug stores, or online. If you've run out of patches, it is important that you replenish your supply rather than waiting until your next visit for confirmation of whether or not you need to continue patching.

 5) The glasses prescription will not change as the vision improves with patching.

 6) We understand how difficult it can be to patch your child, but you will need to persist for the sake of your child's vision. Having your child perform fun activities while patching (such as reading, colouring/drawing, playing games/puzzles) or setting up a reward system can make the experience more enjoyable.

 7) Atropine is a safe alternative but it is not recommended for every patient. While using atropine, it is especially important to follow our instructions and to attend every visit. If your child is using atropine drops, please refrain from using them 1-2 days prior to the appointment.
